Leesville Police investigate home improvement fraud

Posted: Updated:

LEESVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Leesville Police Department warns citizens to guard against home improvement fraud.

The Leesville Police Department said in a release on Jan. 7, officials would like to advise citizens to be aware about Home Improvement fraud. LPD said when contacting a Home Improvement Contractor (i.e. plumber, carpenter, electrician, etc.), make sure to check that they are licensed in the State of Louisiana, and hold an occupational license in the City of Leesville. To be able to do any type of home improvement work inside the City of Leesville, the contractor must be licensed.

LPD said to ask the contractor for their license and ensure that it is in fact their license, that it is not expired and that it is active and not suspended or restricted for any reason. There are different State websites that are in place for citizens to check on Home Improvement License numbers. The Louisiana State Plumbing Board website is www.spbla.com, and rosters, statuses and violations for plumbing contractors are available to the public.

LPD said it has had several complaints about Home Improvement Fraud. LPD is currently investigating several cases where a license number is being used by a person for whom the license is not registered for.
