Protecting pipes

Posted: Updated:

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Protecting your pipes is very important when it comes to saving money and convenience as the temperatures drop.

Louisiana may not be known for having treacherous snow storms and a cold tundra landscape.

"Been living here 23 years."

But when it's cold, it's cold!

"It's about the coldest I have seen it myself."

That's why when freezing temperature strikes, make sure that your pipes are protected.

Because if you don't and they freeze then you are looking at a big bill coming from a plumber somewhere," said Tim Townley with McGee Plumbing.

One of the most important things you can do is use black foam insulation to keep those pipes from busting.

Insulating pipes is one of the few easy preventive steps to take when protecting pipes. Another is to keep your water faucets dripping.

"Leave the hot side faucet running, the cold side. Hose bibs outside leave them dripping, you know a little slight run," said James Mauritz from Parsons Plumbing.

If your house is off the ground--make sure to put skirting around the house to keep it as warm as possible.

"Keep underneath the house covered from the wind. It is best to keep it insulated and have water running. That is the main thing," said Mauritz.

And plumbers say it's cheaper to prevent your pipes from busting.

"If something breaks it is going to cost to fix it. If you prevent it from getting to that part then you will save yourself some money," said Townley.

You can find black foam insulation at your local plumbing shop which is vital to keeping your pipes protected.
