Suspicious Package Deemed Safe by Police

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Alexandria Police Department and other law enforcement  are investigating a suspicious package at the Kroger on MacArthur Drive, which was later deemed safe by investigators late Tuesday night,

UPDATE: Shortly before 10:30 p.m., the robot removed the suspicious package from the shopping cart it was in. An explosive charge was then detonated.

No word yet why the package was deemed suspicious nor what was in the package.

However, Chief Lampert has told us that the package was safe and the public was never in any danger.

Police were called just after 6 p.m. on January 7 to an area between PetCo and Kroger.

Bomb tech are on the scene and waiting on the robot used to examine suspicious packages.

You are urged to stay away from the area until the situation is cleared up.

No one is able to get in or out of the entire Kroger parking lot at this time.

APD, the Alexandria Fire Department, and Acadian Ambulance are standing by monitoring the situation.

APD Chief Loren Lampert, state police, and the FBI are on scene.
