Fort Polk Education Initiative Takes Next Step

Posted: Updated:

LEESVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - After comments by the Army Chief of Staff, school districts near military installations are preparing for new evaluations by the Army.

In October the Army Chief of Staff called for performance evaluations of schools near military installations.

"Providing a high quality of education for the military child is a high priority, he then went on to challenge the military families outside of the military installations to do just that," said Garrison Commander Glenn Moore.

More than 30% of students in Vernon Parish are from military families.  The Vernon Parish School District saw a need to plan for those evaluations.

"In the interest of doing even better, that's why we're all here today, is to find out what we need to do to make our schools even better. Not just for the military families and children but for our own people too, our own citizens," said Leesville Mayor Robert Rose.

"The strategy is to make all these folks aware of where we are in our school system today. And we'll be seeking input from them on directions that we can go and possibly improve on for the future," said Superintendent Jackie Self.

The goal is to educate the public about the quality of Vernon Parish schools and their importance to Fort Polk especially with the possibility of troop reductions in the future.

"The process that the Army will use in the next round of possible reductions in the military will be to, one of the components will be the education system surrounding the base," said Self.

The United States Army plans to evaluate schools near military installations based on state test scores like the ACT.
