ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - An aging population means an increase in the demand for certain resources especially as more and more Americans retire.

Kay Pringle is the director of nurses at the Grace Home, an inpatient hospice at Christus Saint Frances Cabrini Hospital.

"There's a lot of quality of life that we can help them achieve in hospice care," said Pringle.

The Department of Health and Human Services estimates the percentage of Americans 65 years and older to double by the year 2030. An increase that could put a strain on services like the Grace Home.

"The aging is going to double in size, it continues to grow our age in population of people who are disabled  is growing, we're seeing a lot more of the disabled population that is coming through to our office for services," said Jamie Jones.

So organizations like the Cenla Area Agency on Aging are stepping in to help families make difficult decisions regarding their loved ones.

"Knowing the guidelines for hospice, the criteria, what medicare assists with in regards to the payment, things like that we can determine if it's something that would be beneficial to them," said Jones.

For Pringle, this means she can continue to offer a quality of life to her patients they wouldn't receive in a normal hospital setting.

"It was just special for me to see the quality of care that can be given to a patient at the end of life and the special needs that that patient has and the family as well, the needs they have if their loved one is facing a life limiting illness," said Pringle.

The Cenla Area Agency on Aging also offers help with Medicaid applications and covering medications.
