La. Attorney General warns of fake court appearance email scam

Posted: Updated:

BATON ROUGE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Louisiana Attorney General Buddy Caldwell warns of an email scam that instructs recipients to appear in court.

The fraudulent email with the subject line "Notice of Appearance in Court" is allegedly sent from a "court clerk" instructing recipients to appear for "illegal software usage."

Caldwell said the emails deceptively impersonate the domain name of several well-known law firms and contain an attachment, purportedly a copy of the court notice, which may link to a computer virus.  The emails request the recipient bring an "identity document" on the specified court date.  The law firms mentioned in the emails confirm the emails did not originate from them.

Sanettria "Sam" Pleasant, head of the Attorney General's Public Protection Division, said her office has fielded about 20 calls and emails from consumers this week about the fake messages.

"Ignore and delete these emails.  They are not official court notices and recipients do not need to appear in court," Pleasant advised.

To report a scam or file a complaint, please contact the Attorney General's Consumer Protection Hotline at 1-800-351-4889 or online at www.agbuddycaldwell.com
