COTTONPORT, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- It's the only shelter in Avoyelles Parish that takes in animals and aims to find them permanent homes and it's only been open for a little more than a year. Although they've seen success- they've still got a long way to go. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has the details on how you can help.

The Avoyelles Animal Welfare Society- the only no-kill shelter in the parish- has been open now for more than a year.

"We have been very successful now our first year. We have adopted out over a hundred animals," says Phyllis Lemoine, a volunteer on the organization's board of directors.

They've got every kind of animal- dogs from big to small- and even a cat room filled with friendly felines in need of a home.

"It's a lot of hard work but it's very rewarding when you see an animal go out to a good home," says Vice President Darlene Gormsen.

But, the shelter is in need of more than just homes for pets. They say they're in desperate need of volunteers.

"We'll show you what to do. If you've got a few hours a week you can spare. If you love animals we definitely need the help," adds Gormsen.

The shelter takes in strays and surrendered pets, but they've also taken in animals illegally dumped at the shelter...and they're running out of room.

"We're in desperate need of foster homes for some of the animals, so if we had foster homes we could take in some of the animals," says Lemoine.

The animal welfare society is aiming to raise awareness about animals in Avoyelles Parish- and they're asking for your help.

"We want people in Avoyelles Parish to be aware of the neglect of animals and the abuse of animals and to get involved. Get involved with us we're no-kill. We keep the animals. We try to find good homes for them. Just if you're an animal lover please contact us and get involved with us," says Gormsen.
