Vidalia Fruit of the Loom to cut workforce in half

VIDALIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Layoffs to come at Vidalia Fruit of the Loom distribution center.

Layoffs are coming to one Vidalia company. Fruit of the Loom will cut its workforce in half at its distribution center there starting on March 10, 2014. Martin Mills, a subsidiary of the Kentucky-based company said it will lay off nearly 150 workers. The center currently employees 260 people and is also the largest employer for the city.

In a release on Jan. 7, Martin Mills said employees have been given a notice of the downsizing. The company said it will offer various employment services with the assistance of the State's Dislocated Worker Unit.

Senior Vice President of Distribution, Bill Tucker said in a press statement, "This decision is in no way a reflection on  the efforts of our employees. We thank all our dedicated employees for their service and encourage other area employers to give these excellent workers ever consideration for employment opportunities."
