ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Sheriff William Earl Hilton announces the grand re-opening of the South Alexandria sub-station on January 15.

The sub-station is located at 3311 Third Street in Alexandria.

The sub-station was first put into operation in 1991 under Sheriff Grady Kelley as a response to the South Alexandria community requests.

When Sheriff Hilton was elected in 1992, he continued its operation.  The sub-station was closed under the previous administration and the other sub-stations in the parish were put on a limited work basis which was replaced by a central dispatch system.

During Sheriff Hilton's campaign, one of the most requested changes was to have the substations in the local communities fully staffed and operational for quicker response time to calls for service.  The South Alexandria community requested their sub-station be put back into operation as well.

The Sheriff's Office has collaborated with Joe Williams of the Pill Box Pharmacy and is leasing a portion of that building for the sub-station.

"This is a perfect example of how private business and law enforcement can work together toward a common goal of a safer community" said Sheriff Hilton.

In August of 2012, Sheriff Hilton re-instated 24 hour operation and dispatching to the sub-stations in Boyce, Glenmora, Tioga and Deville.  Another sub-station was added in the Kolin area in January of 2013.

The Community Police Section and Neighborhood Patrol Section of the Enforcement Division work out of the Kolin sub-station.

The South Alexandria sub-station will provide dispatching and assistance to the School Resource Officer Section of the Enforcement Division and will later handle the deputies assigned to the southeast parts of Rapides Parish to include the Poland, Echo, Lecompte and Cheneyville communities.

"Our job is to provide the citizens of Rapides Parish safe communities to live in and raise their families.  Sub-stations help us accomplish this goal," said Sheriff Hilton.

In 2013, the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office responded to over 34,000 calls for service parish wide.
