ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – The nation will celebrate the life of Doctor Martin Luther King, Junior on January 20, 2014, with events all across the country, including some in Alexandria.

It begins on January 19 with a march and wreath laying ceremony.  The march will begin at 4:30 p.m. at the intersection of Martin Luther King Drive and Washington Street.  From there participants will march to an area under the I49 overpass near Murray Street.  Members of the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity will lay a wreath in honor of Doctor King. Rev. Clarence Dupar, Jr. of the New Bethel Community Baptist Church will be the speaker.

On January 20, beginning at 6:30 a.m., the annual Martin Luther King, Junior prayer breakfast will be held at Convention Hall. Rapides Parish Assistant District Attorney Monique Metoyer will be the featured speaker.  The breakfast is free and open to the public.

Then at 10 a.m. the parade will roll down Bolton Avenue and wind its way down Jackson Street and finally end up at the Riverfront Center in Downtown Alexandria.

At noon, a rally will take place.  Telley Mabina, a motivational speaker from New Orleans, will be the featured speaker for the event.
