Tamiflu supplies strained

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - We are all pretty sick and tired of hearing about the flu - but you might be sick a little longer as Tamiflu shortages have been reported across the country.

Tamiflu is a prescription drug available in capsule and liquid forms. It's used to reduce the severity of flu symptoms. A spokesperson for the drug manufacturer stated that a strong and early demand for Tamiflu as well as a temporary delay in the packaging has caused the strain on supply. Local pharmacies we talked to do have it in stock, but say they're ordering mass quantities to keep up with demand.

"We have been very busy. people have been coming in pretty sick but one good thing about it is we are able to help them that we do have the medicine that they need," said Sharteer Harris of The Pill Box.

As for the flu shot - the Rapides Parish Health Unit is out of it. They won't be getting any more. If you plan to get one somewhere else - call ahead.
