Young Achiever's Spotlight

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- There's a group of dancers from Avoyelles Parish who had the opportunity to perform in the national spotlight- but in a very familiar Louisiana venue. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton introduces us to the dancers of the All-State Sugar Bowl halftime show.

The Dance Factory in Mansura has made quite a name for itself outside of the small town.

"We've gone to New York. We do competitions. We've pretty much danced in the neighboring states over the last couple of years," says Jill Chatelain, owner and instructor of The Dance Company.

And recently- yet another opportunity was made for a group of 10 dancers.

"For the first time the dancers had the opportunity to perform at a bowl game. The All-State Sugar Bowl halftime show in New Orleans."

"I thought wow I've never been in a bowl before. This is my first time and there are a lot of people in here," says dancer Raven Chatelain.

"You walk in and you're just mind-blown. Like it's huge and it's just really cool," says dancer Carlie Boudreaux.

The World Heritage Performing Arts Company chose dancers from across the country for the performance. The Dance Company was one of only three groups from the state.

"The first thing they did actually was have an audition and out of the 653 there was about 22 rows on the field and we were actually the third row," adds Jill.

After days of practice, the girls donned the field of the Super Dome decked in pink and silver sequins to dance to live music played by high school bands.

"I was really nervous in the beginning but once I got out there it was easy. It came to me," says dancer Amelia canal.

"It was an experience that I never thought I'd get but it was awesome," adds Boudreaux.

"I thought it was really cool," says Raven.

They're a group of young achievers representing Avoyelles Parish- dancing in the spotlight.

"It was amazing to see that people from all over know our company and know that we can dance and it was a great experience," adds Canal.

While they were in New Orleans, the group also got the chance to learn dances from the choreographers of the Taylor Swift tour and Disney's High School Musical.
