ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - An Alexandria man has been arrested in connection to driving through a daycare at the intersection of Bertie Street and Rapides Avenue in Alexandria.

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, on January 16 at about 3 p.m., deputies assigned to the Metro Division were in the area of Bayou Rapides Road and Macarthur Drive when they observed a subject make a traffic violation.

Deputies initiated a traffic stop and had the vehicle stopped when, as they were approaching the vehicle, the suspect fled at a high rate of speed.

Deputies pursued the suspect only a short distance when they observed the suspect pass a stopped school bus, lose control, drive upon the levy and then crash into a day care on the corner of Bertie St. and Rapides Ave.

Fortunately, there were no children in the day care at the time of the incident.

The suspect, identified as James Earl Johnson, Jr, 31 of Alexandria, was transported to a local hospital with minor injuries.

No other civilians or deputies were injured.

Johnson will be charged with several violations but details on those charges are not yet available.

Narcotics were also found in the vehicle.

Metro Division Detectives were on scene and the investigation is ongoing.

"Vehicle pursuits are some of the most dangerous parts of law enforcement, for the officers and the public.  This person could have injured several people, especially the children in the bus and at the day care.  I am thankful no one else was hurt, especially any children" said Sheriff William Earl Hilton.
