Driving safely

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Driving in the snow is not easy - as the many people who ventured onto the roads learned - sometimes the hard way.

Here are a few tips to keep you safe on the way to your destination:

Give yourself plenty of space between you and other cars. Do not drive faster than you need to, and if you don't have to drive, just stay at home. Also - make sure your tires have good traction and enough air - but not too much - in them.

"If you mash the gas too fast, yeah you'll spin out. And just try to idle at the decent speed when you don't have to accelerate very fast and you can stay straight," said Phillip Kelley of E and J Tire.

Remember to take special care when you cross bridges because they will become icy before the roads will.
