Annual VFW Conference in Alexandria

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Louisiana Veterans of Foreign Wars held its mid-year conference in Alexandria – and some familiar faces were there.

The event is a chance for veterans from all over the state to come together.

The group also presents awards to public safety workers and honor students for the Voice of Democracy Banquet.

The conference also gave the VFW a chance to talk about plans for the rest of the year.

"This is a changing organization. The veterans' communities are a changing community. As we down size in Afghanistan, there are many things we need to do in this organization. We are making some changes within the organization; some of the things that used to be very important to veterans are not quite as important. Some of the things for young veterans are more important," said Glen Gardner, a VFW member.

Senator David Vitter was also at the VFW conference.

Vitter joined the race for governor earlier in the week.

Senator Vitter thanked the veterans for their service.

He also talked about issues facing veterans such as V.A. backlog and cost of living adjustment cuts.

Vitter also told News Channel 5 about some of his plans.

"I have had a very busy and productive week since then going all around the state. I have literally been to every major part of the state since then and had a great response.  I am going to spend a lot of time this year listening and learning from people, because I have a lot listening to do and a lot to learn," said Senator Vitter.

The VFW conference ends on January 26th.

The election for the next governor of Louisiana will be in 2015.
