RPSO: pedestrian hit by impaired driver

RAPIDES PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – A Pineville man has been arrested after hitting a pedestrian while driving an SUV.

According to the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office, on January 26, 2014, RPSO received a complaint in reference to a pedestrian being struck by a vehicle in the Wardville area. 

When deputies got there, the complainant advised that she and another family member heard a verbal altercation outside of their residence in the yard of a residence located at 341 Dupree Street. 

As the altercation progressed, one of the persons involved, Roy Allen Ussery, took control of his 2004 Dodge Durango which contained his children and other family members. 

Deputies say Roy then drove the SUV erratically through the yard of the residence as well as that of the neighbor's yard before entering the roadway, narrowly missing another person involved in the disturbance. 

Roy stopped the SUV in front of 335 Dupree Street after learning the victim, who intended to leave the residence with him, was not inside the vehicle.  He immediately began driving the vehicle in reverse to return to the residence unaware that the victim was approaching from behind. 

Ussery struck the victim with the SUV, which resulted in significant head injuries to the victim. 

During their investigation, RPSO Detectives were able to establish sufficient probable cause that supported witnesses accounts and that Ussery was impaired at the time of the incident.

Roy Allen Ussery, 34 of 440 Donna Drive Pineville, Louisiana, was arrested later that morning on charges of Driving While Intoxicated 1st Offense (Child Endangerment Law), 1st Degree Vehicular Negligent Injury, and Reckless Operation. 

Roy is currently being detained at the Rapides Parish Detention Center, in lieu of posting a $150,750 bond.
