Lady Demons win against Abilene Christian

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – Northwestern State improves home record, downs Abilene Christian.

Renata Marquez's 3-pointer with seven seconds left fell just short and Trudy Armstead grabbed the defensive rebound to seal a 76-72 win for Northwestern State's women's basketball team over Abilene Christian Saturday afternoon in Southland Conference action.

NSU (12-9, 5-4 SLC) finished the finals stretch at 6-of-8 from the free throw line to grab a winning record in conference play again.  For the game, the Lady Demons were 21-for-25 from the charity stripe.

The win improved the Lady Demons homecourt record to 8-1 this season.  Abilene Christian falls to 12-10 overall and 3-4 in conference play.

Northwestern State used a 11-0 run to go from two down of Abilene Christian to leading by nine with just over two minutes left.  The Wildcats used a 6-0 run to answer and cut the lead to four with 58 seconds remaining in the contest.

Janelle Perez, who finished with 12 points, nailed two free throws followed by a good jumper by Whitney West. 

After Armstead was fouled by Alexis Mason with 38 seconds left, she drained two free throws.  She finished the game with 13 points, four on free throws in the final minute.

West hit one free throw for ACU and after a turnover from NSU, Marquez hit a 3-pointer that cut the Lady Demon lead to 74-72.  Armstead iced the game on free throws after her big defensive rebound with seven seconds left.

Kourtney Pennywell led the Lady Demons in scoring with 17 points, a career high from her passing her previous mark of 14 at Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.  She also had nine rebounds in the game.

Keisha Lee scored in double-figures with 11 points, nine of which were scored in the second half.

ACU also had four players with 10 or more points.  Mason had 18, Sydney Shelstead and Marquez had 16, and West had 12.

The Wildcats had a tremendous night from 3-point range and finished 13-of-32 (41 percent) from behind the arc.

They finished the game a 42 percent from the field (27-64).

Northwestern State was 25-of-56 (45 percent) from the field and 5-of-15 from 3-point range.

The Wildcats led by as much as eight points in the second half, but the Lady Demons outscored them 12-3 over a three minute period to grab a 47-46 with 14:57 to play. From there, it was a back-and-forth game until NSU used its 11-0 run to jump out 70-61 with 2:04 to play.

It was the fourth straight contest that NSU outrebounded its opponents.  The Lady Demons had 38 boards and ACU had 35.

NSU had 12 turnovers, four less than ACU.  The Lady Demons are now 10-2 when the have fewer turnovers than their opponent.

Northwestern State has two more games left in its homestand, four more home games left this season.  It will host McNeese State on Thursday at 5:30 on ESPN 3.
