Athletic programs banned in Louisiana-based university

BATON ROUGE, La. (AP) - All of Southern University's athletic programs are ineligible for postseason competition while the school attempts to satisfy NCAA requests for additional and corrected paperwork regarding the academic progress of student-athletes dating to 2009.

The ban is significant in regards to the men's and women's basketball teams, which are both in first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Three other winter sports - men's and women's indoor track and women's bowling - also have upcoming postseasons.

The Advocate reports Athletic Director William Broussard said Thursday that the NCAA has given no indication any sanctions might be applied retroactively, meaning the Jaguars' 2013 SWAC football championship appears safe.

Broussard says Southern received word of the problem in early December and have been working to fix it since then.
