WINNFIELD, La. (KALB News Channel 5) -- The Food Bank of Central Louisiana opened a Kids Cafe program in Winnfield and will host an open house on Feb. 20 at 4:30 p.m.

The program site is the Tommy Hamms Youth Center at 703 Moss Street in Winnfield, according to Jayne Wright-Velez, executive director at the Food Bank of Central Louisiana.

The program will serve up to 50 children by providing snacks and an evening meal, along with tutoring and nutrition programs.

The Winnfield Kids Cafe program is open Monday through Thursday from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. and is for students in first through eighth grades.

This free, after-school and summer program provides nutritious meals to youth that might not otherwise receive evening meals.

In addition to providing hot meals to hungry children, Kids Cafe offers nutrition education, character enrichment, tutoring, and individual attention kids need with their schoolwork.

The participants will also help plant a garden at the site and will harvest the produce to use in their evening meals.
