A 15,000 mile mission

Posted: Updated:

GRANT PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- He's been walking for more than two years and today he walked into Cenla. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton introduces us to a man on a mission to walk 15,000 miles in honor of our nation's service men and women.

You can't miss spotting Mac Mcquown. You can find him walking along U.S. roadways decked out in a flight suit and a cowboy hat and pulling a supply cart behind him.

"Sometimes people who don't know what I'm doing- they spot me. They're kind of like I've got 4 heads. They're not sure what to do," says Mcquown.

So far he's walked nearly three thousand miles- that's 53 million steps.

"I haven't met a stranger yet."

And Monday- he began walking through Cenla.

"I walked to Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Mississippi, and to here in Louisiana."

"Mr. Mcquown's goal is to walk the steps of the capitol building in all 50 states. He's on the way to Baton Rouge now and according to his estimates he should get there on March 6th."

Mcquown is a former U.S. Marine walking for a very personal cause.

"I noticed when our veterans came home from combat our veterans- they seemed to be forgotten about and that didn't sit very well with me."

The purpose of his journey is to raise awareness about homelessness among veterans- he calls it Operation Walk America.

"They really appreciate that people can help them get the help they need."

He's got a long road ahead of him...

"This is not a race for me. This is a marathon."

But he's a veteran on a mission and he says you can help.

"Take a moment and thank them for their service. We don't want the star of fame on Hollywood. We just want to be remembered."

Mcquown estimates it will take him about six more years to hit up all the states. After he leaves Louisiana he's headed out west.
