Funding for Alexandria's Community Services Division

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Alexandria City Council will consider calling for a special election to allow voters to decide on a new millage increase to help fund the city's Community Services Division.

In response to public surveys, Mayor Jacques Roy is proposing a major overhaul of the division.

Part of the plan calls for a millage increase. That increase would be no more than a six mills for a 20 year period.

Three mills would help fund parks and recreation capital improvements, create new recreational programs and pay for new positions.  Any additional money would help fund the zoo.

"We have as you've seen today, as good of assets as anywhere else in the state, what we lack is dedicated revenue for programming and dedicated revenue for operations and maintenance of those assets," said Mayor Jacques Roy of Alexandria.

If approved voters could decide on a millage increase in the May 3rd election.
