Celebrating Black History Month

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- From Thurgood Marshall to Stevie Wonder- the kids at D. F. Huddle New Vision Academy have been studying African Americans who have made an impact throughout history. Today News Channel 5's Rachael Penton visited the school to find out just what Black History Month means to these kids.

February is Black History Month. For the students at D. F. Huddle New Vision Academy this means it's time to learn about famous African Americans from history.

"They love the projects. They love to dress up. Each class has two presenters and they love to work on it because it gives them the chance to learn about someone they're not too familiar about," says special ed teacher Melissa Brown.

Every classroom at the school chose a person to study.

"They're very good role models to little children and older adults."

From politicians to entertainers there were a variety of subjects.

"He was the first African-American Supreme Court judge."

"He was a mathematician and he can inspire us."

"Solomon Northup- he was born a free black man."

On Tuesday students presented the projects to judges.

"It took us a lot of time and it was a lot of hard work. We did every subject."

So what does Black History Month mean to these kids?

"It means that we get to learn about our heritage and where we come from."

"Their sacrifice yesterday is our freedom today."

"It helps us understand what our ancestors went through and it helps us to focus and be our best."

"We're learning about these people and they're inspiring us to do more things and try to help people of our kind and they're telling us we should all get along and we loyal to each other and be equal."

Black History Month is a time for the past to meet the present, to make sure it continues on into the future.

"They can tell their parents and tell their little brothers and sisters about different individuals they learned about," adds Brown.

The school would like the community to their Black History Program this Friday at 1:45 PM. The kids will be singing, dancing, and acting.
