Alexandria City Council to let citizens weigh in on proposal for recreation

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Alexandria City Council voted Tuesday to let citizens vote on a special millage proposal that, if passed, would serve to provide operations and maintenance funds, staffing, capital improvements, and programming for parks, recreation and athletics throughout the city as well as help fund the city's award-winning zoo.

"We need to have something for these kids," District 1 Councilman Ed Larvadain III said. "We need swimming, recreation, whatever we can do to help."

Larvadain has long been a supporter of improved recreation, athletic and other programming throughout the city recognizing what numerous studies have concluded — that providing youth with activities to participate in and places to go cuts crime.

The special election will be held on May 3 and will ask citizens to consider a special tax of 6 mills for 20 years in order to support operations and maintenance, capital improvements, staff and programming for parks, recreation and athletics and the zoo.
