Introducing the University High School of Cenla

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- A new school in Cenla will open it's doors for the first time next fall. But this isn't your ordinary school- the students are both high schoolers and college students. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has the details on the University High School of Cenla.

There's a new opportunity for students in town and it's called the University High School of Cenla.

"This is a new experience. A new established high school that will give students the opportunity to dual enroll and attend high school," says Heather Poole, Vice Chancellor of Enrollment at LSUA.

Students who begin the program in their freshmen year can earn up to 60 college credits by the time they graduate- that's equal to an Associate's Degree.

"It's important to note this isn't like college. This is college. It's blending that high school experience with a college experience," says Poole.

The school will be made up of tuition paying students- some of them former CCA students- and voucher program students, but it will be a fast track to college for anyone who is willing to put in the work.

"Students will be able to stay on at LSUA and finish in two years and then have two years left of their TOPS award to use towards something else," says Poole.

The school will be beneficial to LSUA education students as well- they'll be able to complete student teaching requirements right there on campus and they'll have the chance to assist faculty with the school's clubs and organizations.

"It's an opportunity that we can give them a more intense field experience, one in which they're more fully immersed in the school culture," says Kionna LeMalle, an Associate Professor of Education.

Plus, having college students inside the high school classrooms will help ease the students into the college culture they'll soon be entering.

"They can talk to the high school students a little bit more about what it's like to transition to college. What it takes to be successful," adds LeMalle.

It's a unique opportunity designed for any student interested in getting a jump start on a college education right here at home.

"It's just, it's really a neat thing and an opportunity I think that's unique for our community," says Poole.

LSUA will be holding an open house on February 25th for prospective students as well as possible employees- they plan to hire a brand new faculty and staff. Applications for students will be available beginning today on LSUA's website.

Here's the press release:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) – LSU of Alexandria is proud to announce a high school partnership that establishes University High School of Cenla.

University High will be located on the LSUA campus and will begin classes in August.

Students will experience a college educational environment beginning in the ninth grade.

This is a bold approach based on the principle that academic rigor, combined with the opportunity to save time and money is a strong motivator for students to work hard.

The school will allow eligible students to simultaneously earn a high school diploma and up to 60 college credits toward an associate's degree through dual enrollment.

"This educational model has been proven successful around the country.  This is such a great opportunity for the students of Central Louisiana.

The students admitted into University High School will develop intellectually, learn interpersonal skills and establish personal connections to the world in pursuit of their postsecondary goals.

This creates a transformational high school experience," says LSUA Assistant Vice-Chancellor of Enrollment Management Heather Poole.

Dual enrollment offers families the opportunity to save thousands of dollars in college costs and still be eligible for the states popular merit scholarship TOPS upon graduation.

Graduates of the high school will have the opportunity to continue at LSUA to complete their degree or they can transfer their credits to another university.

"While we want academically prepared students to apply, students that come to University High do not have to be geniuses," says Julie Crews, the Board's Director of Academic Affairs. "They have to be willing to work hard.

It's a situation where, if a student works hard and is committed, they will shine.  The focus of University High School of Cenla is to make certain our students are successful not only in high school but throughout life."

University High is a tuition based school with payment plans available.

"It was important for us in this initial offering to keep the tuition affordable and to accept the Louisiana Believes Student Scholarship," says Poole.

Additionally, University High students will have the opportunity to play sports and participate in other high school activities such as clubs.

Applications are being accepted for teachers and administrators and students.
