VA Hospital Hosts Black History Program

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)--The Alexandria Veterans' Affairs Hospital held its Black History program Monday.

Major Jamar Gailes was the featured speaker for the event. His message was that as a country we've come a long way, but there's still a long road to travel to realize true equality.
Gailes also says that if Martin Luther King Jr. were alive today he would say the fight is not over.

"He would be able to say that some of his dream has been realized and stuff, but outside of President Obama being the first African American President there, there's still a lot of injustices that are going on that still need some soldiers on that battlefield  to fight," Gailes said.

Gailes is in the Louisiana Army National Guard. He's served  two tours in Afghanistan and one in Iraq.
