Alexandria Optimist Club oratorical contest

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Alexandria Optimist Club's annual oratorical contest was Thursday afternoon at the Westside Regional Library.

Fifteen students from local high schools competed for a chance at some cash and to move on to a regional competition next month. This year's topic was how "passions impact the world." The students presented their speeches and were judged on their performance. For the winners of the contest, it could mean some big bucks.

"We pay them very well for doing this: monetarily they make money, and they have a chance to go on to the next level and win a $2500 scholarship," said Gary Lahood of the Alexandria Optimist Club. "Which we've had two or three winners from Alexandria in the past."

And the winners are...

Girls' Division:

1st - Paige Dubois of Tioga High

2nd - Stephanie Lutfallah of Alexandria Senior High

3rd - Dena Winegart of Alexandria Senior High

Boys' Division

1st - Seth Palmer of Alexandria Senior High

2nd - Brandon Wilson of Bolton High

3rd - Thomas Degeyter of Bolton High

The top winners from each division each took home $200 and will compete March 22 in Leesville at the regional competition.
