Salvation Army thanks holiday volunteers

Posted: Updated:

PINEVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - With the holidays behind us, the Salvation Army is saying thank you to their Christmas season volunteers.

An estimated 1600 people volunteered over the holidays, and nearly 300 of them came out for a gumbo dinner celebration at the Pineville Community Center.

Awards and certificates were given to volunteers during the program. Even a few people who were helped by the Army shared their stories with the crowd.

Army leaders say, the help often comes full circle.

"Some of the people who come to help are people who were helped when they were younger," said Major Ken Nelson. "We had a bell-ringer this year who, he and his wife were ringing bells, and when I picked up the pot in the evening, I said thank you. He said, 'No no, I want to thank you.' And I asked why's that? And he said, 'Because last year, we were recipients.'"

Major Ken Nelson says the money collected but not used over the holidays will now help fund operations all year round.
