Your Safest Bet: Take Your Blood Pressure On Both Sides

Posted: Updated:

A new study suggests blood pressure should be measured in both arms  because if there is a difference in the result it could be a sign of heart problems.

Researchers at Massachusetts General Hospital studied more than three thousand middle-age men who were free of heart disease at the start of the study.  They found those who had a significant difference in systolic blood pressure between arms had a much higher risk for heart attacks and other cardiovascular events.

Systolic blood pressure is the top number, when the heart is at work while the lower number is when the heart is at rest.

One out of ten men in the study had different systolic results.
