Round Five of Winter Weather headed to Cenla

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The fifth winter weather event of 2014 is headed to Cenla.

Any frozen precipitation can make driving very difficult - and dangerous.

That is why it is very important to know some winter driving tips in order to stay safe.

"It is cold, very cold," said J.R. Dousay, one Cenla resident.

Not only is weather an inconvenience for some...

"I couldn't stand it, about to freeze to death."

It also has the potential to be dangerous for those traveling on the roads.

"Drivers down here are not used to this. There is a lot of wrecks and stuff and casualties. We are just not used to it," said Dousay.

"There is a lot of people who have never drove on icy or snowy highways or streets, and they really don't know how to drive," said John Vincent, another Cenla resident.

State police say safety should always be a top priority for drivers and it's important to slow down, allow extra following and stopping distance and carry supplies in case you are stranded.

If the weather conditions get bad, you should only travel if absolutely necessary.

"With any winter weather event we usually always work an increase number of crashes which we did we were hit pretty hard. But it could have been a lot worse if people wouldn't have heeded our warning of staying off the roads," said Trooper Scott Moreau with the Louisiana State Police.

"It is just more safe for people to stay at home if they can, if they don't have to get out."

It is also important to use extra caution while driving on bridges and overpasses.
