Boyce man sentenced for killing 18-month-old baby

BOYCE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Sentence held for Boyce man found guilty in death and torture of child.

According to the Rapides Parish District Attorney's Office, Jaymes L. Harris, 25, of Boyce has been sentenced for second degree murder and obstruction of justice in the death of an 18-month-old child. The sentencing for the live-in boyfriend of the child's mother was held by Judge Patricia Koch on Feb. 21, 2014.

According to a release, an autopsy examination of the child showed multiple burns, matching the metal end of a BIC lighter, bruises and contusions over the child's body. It also showed damage to multiple internal organs, including a rupture of the child's stomach. The release also said a Pathologist testified that the severity of the injuries indicated the abuse occurred over a long period of time.

Harris was charged with obstruction of justice for allegedly putting Vaseline on the child's body to conceal the bruises and injuries. 

Harris was committed to the Louisiana Department of Corrections for life, without the possibility of parole. He was also sentenced to 20 concurrent years for obstruction of justice.
