Marksville dog burials become a concern

Posted: Updated:

MARKSVILLE, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The city of Marksville is taking some heat over the burial of about 10 dogs after a picture appeared on a social media site.

The picture was taken last week at the city landfill where animals that have been euthanized or found dead along the roadside are buried.  The picture has created a firestorm on Facebook.

Mayor John Lemoine tells News Channel 5 that city crews re-buried the animals.

Mayor Lemoine says that when they originally buried the dogs the ground was too wet.

"There was a lot of water coming out of the ground so we quit digging put the dogs in and covered it up, but then the ground is saturated and when all the terrestrial rains came, it was just so much rain, and there were that many dogs and they just you know started popping out of the ground," said John Lemoine, the mayor of Marksville.

Lemoine says that stray animals are kept for six to eight weeks before they are euthanized.
