Looking back on 100 years of business

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Members of the Alexandria Rotary Club got a chance to walk down memory lane Tuesday, as two local businessmen recalled their families' place in Alexandria history.

Graham Kramer, owner of Kramer Funeral Home, spoke about how his family business began, and Ed Caplan of Caplan's talked of his family being in business in Cenla for more than 100 years.

"At the time my grandfather started in business in 1891--and the population was 3,000, there was no such thing as automobiles or telephones," said Kramer.

Caplan said, "It's a wonderful legacy to have to think that my great-grandfather started a business on 4th Street that has endured all the different economic situations of the country through those years, and we're still here."

This month the rotary club is helping to celebrate the Cenla Chamber of Commerce's 100th anniversary by hearing from speakers like these.
