NPSO arrest Campti man in school burglary

NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Natchitoches Parish Sheriff's detectives have arrested aCampti man in connection with the burglary of the Fairview Alpha Elementary School  in north Natchitoches Parish, according toNatchitoches Parish Sheriff Victor Jones Jr.

On Tuesday morning January 21, 2014 at approximately 5:00 a.m., deputies assigned to the NPSO Patrol Division responded to a reported burglaryof the Fairview Alpha Elementary School, in the 1400 block of US-71, north ofCampti.

According to NPSO, deputies say upon their arrival, they learned that schoolsupport personnel  discovered the schoolbeing burglarized during the early morning hours while opening the school fordaily operations.

Suspects fled the school after they realized they had been seen in the school.

NPSO Detectivesand a School Resource Deputy also responded to the scene.

Entry was gained through a rear door.

Taken in the burglary was over $600 cash.

During the investigation, detectives said they processed the crimescene and collected evidence which led them to a suspect identified as DylanColby Smith in the case.

Detectives reported they established sufficient evidence and probablecause to obtain a criminal arrest warrant signed by a Tenth Judicial DistrictCourt Judge.

After identifying the suspect, and securing the criminalwarrant, detectives said they attempted to locateSmith in the Campti area but were unsuccessful believing that he had fled thearea.

Detectives then entered Smith into the National CrimeInformation Center database as a wanted person, meaning that if any lawenforcement agency ran his name through the database it would reveal that hewas a wanted person by the NPSO.

During early March, Minden Police arrested Smith inconnection with a criminal investigation.   During his arrest, an NCIC check revealed that he was wanted inNatchitoches Parish.

On March 10, NPSO deputies traveled to Minden andtransported Dylan Colby Smith, 20, of Campti,back to Natchitoches where he was booked into the Natchitoches Parish DetentionCenter charged with 1-count of Simple Burglary.

Smith has been released on a $5000 appearance bond set bya Tenth Judicial District Court Judge.

Smith has a prior criminal history.

Detectives said the investigation is currently continuingwith other arrests pending.

Detective Darrel Winder was assisted by the NPSO PatrolDivision, and NPSO SRO Unit.
