Non-OB's Involved In Pre-Natal Care

Posted: Updated:

Nearly one in seven prenatal care visits in the U.S. are conducted by doctors without a specialty in obstetrics.

That's according to a new government report looking at routine prenatal care for 2009 and 2010. It shows teen mothers, women with medicaid or no insurance and those living in small towns had the lowest percentages of prenatal visits with an ob-gyn.

Moms older than 30, with private insurance and living in large urban areas were most likely to see a specialist throughout their pregnancy. Race and ethnicity had no effect on prenatal care choices.
