VPSO warns residents of new scam involving fake jail time

VERNON PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - SheriffSam Craft of the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office would like to notify the publicof a scam that is being reported within the Parish.

TheVernon Parish Sheriff's Office has been notified by residents who are beingcontacted by individuals who indicate that one of the resident's family membersis in jail or going to be arrested on an outstanding warrant.

Thecaller indicates that the resident will need to wire money either to keep thefamily member from being arrested or to bond the family member from jail.

Thecaller will continue to contact the resident after money is sent and indicatethat additional money for medical care or for the family member to leave aforeign country is needed.

Thecalls are originating from telephone numbers in Quebec Canada.  Telephone numbers 514-561-9655 / 514-649-7798have been identified as related with the scam.

Theresident is asked by the caller to wire the money to Mexico City. Once themoney is sent there is no way for law enforcement to recover the money. 

SheriffCraft asks that residents contact their local law enforcement agency so that aconfirmation of any arrest or warrant can be obtained before any funds arewired.

Residentsshould never provide any information to unknown persons who contact themby telephone.

Ifyou receive phone calls of this nature please do not engage in conversationwith the calling party.  Hang up and ifpossible use your telephone service provider options to block the number so youcan no longer be called.
