Guilty plea in highway death of police dispatcher

NEW ORLEANS (AP) - A man has pleaded guilty to vehicular homicide in connection with a head-on highway collision that killed a New Orleans police dispatcher.

The New Orleans Advocate reports ( that 28-year-old Andrew Merchant Jr. of Metairie was sentenced to 7 and ½ years in prison after Friday's guilty plea in a New Orleans courtroom.

Merchant was charged in the death of 51-year-old Paulette Brown, who was fatally injured in a collision on Interstate 610 on Sept. 7. According to court records, Merchant's blood sample showed his blood-alcohol content was 0.25 percent - more than three times the level considered proof of intoxication.
