Many More Alcohol-Related Fatalities Than We Thought

Posted: Updated:

Alcohol may be a factor in more traffic fatalities than we realize.

Researchers with the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism compared blood alcohol levels of people killed in car crashes with those listed on death certificates. Between 1999 and 2009 about three percent of certificates listed alcohol as a contributing cause. But based on the new comparison, nearly a quarter of those who died were legally drunk.

Experts say getting a better picture of what causes accidents can help identify ways to better curb them and keep people alive.
