Chances Of An IRS Audit May Be Less This Year

Posted: Updated:

The tax man cometh, or maybe not as often this year.

Fewer taxpayers are being audited. The Internal Revenue Service audited nearly one and one-half million people last year. That's the lowest number in 5-years.

But don't go patting yourself on the back just yet. Audits aren't down because Americans are getting better at crunching the numbers. Instead, audits are down because the I-R-S is in a cash crunch. Its budget has been shrinking, and less money has meant layoffs and furloughs, therefore fewer people to do the audits.

But not everyone is off the hook. 9-percent of taxpayers with income of more than one-million dollars are audited.
