ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - A gun was recovered yesterday by a Rapides Parish Deputy School Resource Officer after he was alerted by students, according to RPSO.

RPSO reported at approximately 2 p.m. March 25, 2014, the deputy SRO assigned to Peabody High School was approached by different students and advised that another student, later identified as Andrew Daniel Smith, 17, of Alexandria, was in possession of a handgun.

Smith was located by the deputy and escorted to the office where the deputy advised Smith of the complaint.

Smith was then patted down and a .25 caliber semi automatic handgun was located.  The weapon was not loaded and no ammunition was found, said RPSO.

Smith was placed under arrest and transported to the Rapides Parish Detention Center where he was booked for Possession of a Firearm in a School Zone.

Smith was later released on a $25,000.00 bond.

Detectives say the investigation is ongoing and other arrests are possible.

"This is another example of how well our School Resource Officer program works.  These deputies in these schools form a bond with the student of trust and mutual respect.  I would like to commend these students for having the courage to come forward and possibly averting a serious situation" said Sheriff William Earl Hilton.
