Oil expected to drift to sensitive Matagorda Bay

Posted: Updated:

PORT O'CONNOR, Texas (AP) - Crews trying to clean up an oil spill from a punctured barge in Galveston Bay now face the prospect of fighting to protect environmentally sensitive Matagorda Bay.

A statement Wednesday evening from the unified command leading the cleanup effort said a base has been established in the bay shore town of Port O'Connor to coordinate efforts to protect the bay southwest of Galveston.

According to the statement, an oil slick has been found about 15 miles off Matagorda Island and was expected to be pushed toward shore by the weather over the next 24 to 48 hours. Plans are to place a protective boom along the sensitive areas of the island coast. The aim is to protect Matagorda Bay behind the island, home to dozens of rare birds and waterfowl.
