VPSO warns of IRS scam

Posted: Updated:

VERNON PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) VPSO reminds taxpayers to beware of IRS scams.

Sheriff Sam Craft of the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office said VPSO would like to warn taxpayers of an IRS scam that targets immigrants and elderly people.

According to Sheriff Craft, the scam involves a fake IRS agent who calls and says the taxpayer owes back taxes. The caller will pressure the resident for a debit or credit card payment and can often provide the last four digits of the taxpayer's social security number. Scammers will warn of possible arrest or suspension of driver's license, and calls are often followed up with threatening emails.

VPSO said the public should be reminded that the IRS does not contact residents by telephone or email and make demands for monetary payment. The IRS also uses written correspondence to contact taxpayers.

VPSO said citizens can call the IRS in Alexandria, La. at (318) 445-8028 to identify a scam.

Sheriff Craft said family members should advise elderly loved ones of the scam and caution them not to provide personal or bank information to unknown calling parties.
