Florida puts forward bill to allow teachers to arm themselves

Posted: Updated:

Fla. (NBC News) - A bill being considered by Florida lawmakers that would allow teachers to carry loaded guns in classrooms took a step forward Wednesday.

HB 753 would give districts the option to appoint one or more people to carry a concealed gun in school.

Corey Winter likes the idea and thinks it would keep his twin sisters safe in elementary school.

"I think it would deter a lot of people if they see the actual school officials now have the right to protect the children and take things into their own arms," he said.

That's exactly what some people say is the problem.

"I don't want them to be cops, I want them to be teachers and coaches and administrators," says Tom Scott, the chair of the Lee County School Board.

He's against the bill saying, arming teachers takes away from the mission of preparing children for the future.

"And I don't think you do that with a gun strapped on your hip," Scott points out.
