Student parents raise money for fellow parent in need of kidney

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - Some parents of students at St. Frances Cabrini School came together for a good deed.

The school is raising money for another parent in need of a kidney transplant.

"I'm on dialysis, and I'm in need of a kidney," says Wanda Fobbs, a resident of Alexandria.

Fobbs has Lupus disease. The disease has caused her kidneys to fail, and forced her to be on dialysis for more than five years.

Now parents at St. Frances Cabrini school, which one of Fobbs' two children attends, are selling plate lunches to raise money for a kidney transplant.

Shanell Hertzog, a volunteer parent, said, "I wanted to help her, I like helping out people. It's a good thing to do and I will get my blessings in return."

The group of parents hope to raise around $2,000.

"I am very blessed. At Cabrini (school) we are like a family, and I appreciate everything they have done for me to help me," Fobbs said.

Now, Fobbs said her life is more than an issue of health; it is about living a normal life to spend more time with family and friends, especially her children.

"Sometimes I can't attend because I am so drained and I can't go. So I miss out on that part of it," Fobbs said.

Acccording to Fobbs' daughter, Zaylen Tohpson, having time with her mother is what is most important. "Because I want to spend more time with her so we can go on trips during the summer and just have fun together."
