Cenla reacts to McAllister scandal

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- The office of Representative McAllister says that the Congressman has missed the last two days of votes, as well as two hearings with the House Natural Resources committee, of which he is a member. He is spending time with his family here in Louisiana. There is no word yet on exactly when he plans to return to Capitol Hill.

News Channel 5's Rachael Penton spoke with Connie Cooper today. She's the President of the Central Louisiana Democratic Women. The group hosted McAllister at a luncheon just a few weeks ago. This is what she had to say about the incident.

Vance McAllister was elected in November to fill former Congressman Rodney Alexander's vacant seat in Washington and already- he's caught up in a political scandal.

"He's new to the political scene, particularly in Washington. He's in a very high profile position. He's very green," says Cooper.

McAllister- who ran his campaign with a message heavily based on family values was caught on video in December in a romantic encounter with aide Melissa Hixon Peacock. The video was leaked by an unknown source this week.

"When you're a politician it's so easy for you to get into those kinds of situations," adds Cooper.

McAllister has made several appearances here in Cenla, including one at a Democratic Women's luncheon in March.

"The people will tell me come November am I doing the job right, do I need to do the job better, or do they want someone else to do the job," said McAllister at the meeting on March 19, 2014.

"He seemed to really have a way of making sure that he makes the right decision. He came across as not making the decision-making process for granted," says Cooper.

McAllister issued a formal apology Monday night. The congressman will be up for re-election in November with a resume now tainted with political scandal.

"I think it's how he handles it and what he does in earnest to regain the public's trust," says Cooper.

Former congressman and current Louisiana Public Service Commission member Clyde Holloway of Forest Hill was a candidate in the Fifth Congressional District Race. We reached out to Mr. Holloway to get his reaction on the scandal and this is what he had to say:

"I am truly sad for families and children directly involved in this set of circumstances; I pray they can heal. The situation is personally disappointing to me given that Vance made faith the centerpiece of his platform. There is always a danger, when one consistently references his or her faith during a campaign...and then regrettable circumstances like these develop and are brought to light."

According to Congressman McAllister, Melissa Peacock- the woman seen in the video- voluntarily resigned effective yesterday.
