VERNON PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - The Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office previously reported the April 4, 2014 arrest of Karen Lafleur, 52, of Oakdale.

Lafleur was arrested on twenty one counts of issuing worthless checks and one count of theft, according to VPSO.

Upon issuance of a press release, the Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office was contacted by an individual indicating that the suspect had stolen her personal identifying information.

VPSO stated the individual indicated that she was in fact an ex-family member of the suspect and the suspect did personally apply for and fraudulently receive a driver's license, social security card, and birth certificate in the name of Karen Lafleur.

This individual was advised to immediately file a report with her local law enforcement agency so that criminal charges can be pursued.

VPSO reported they further investigated the identity of the arrested female and learned that the female has used approximately fifteen separate identities to include the identity of the individual who contacted VPSO regarding the photograph used in the press release.

The arrested female was booked into the Sabine Parish Detention Center under the name of Karen Susan Peters Slayter.

Through the use of AFIS (Automated Fingerprint Identification System) the suspect has been identified as Karen Peters Slayter and will be re-processed through the VPSO jail accordingly.

Through further investigation it has been determined that the mug shot previously released is in fact a photograph of a victim of identity theft and this victim was in no way affiliated with the crimes allegedly committed by Karen Peters Slayter.

The Vernon Parish Sheriff's Office along with the Louisiana State Police is currently assisting the victim in correcting the information so that the victim's photograph is no longer connected with the suspect.
