Tax deadline is Tuesday

Posted: Updated:

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- It's a chore all of us have to do every year about this time, and this year's deadline is quickly approaching. Tomorrow is the federal tax filing deadline. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has the details on last minute tax preps.

Have you filed your taxes yet? If not, the 2014 deadline is almost here.

"Oh I'm in a rush because I work all year long and I'm busy busy busy trying to get it done," says tax filer Leona Chumley.

For tax preparers like Jackson-Hewitt on MacArthur Drive, the days leading up to the April 15th deadline are often the busiest days of the year.

"Last year at the last two days of tax season, we did. We saw quite a few people. We saw 4 or 500 people or you know it just varies," says Sherry Stevenson of Jackson-Hewitt.

You've got until the end of Tuesday at midnight- to file your federal taxes.

"We don't have a set time to close so if it's 10:00 and you're getting off work and you need to run in here one of us is going to be in here to help you."

"Don't worry. If you can't get your taxes finished by the deadline tomorrow you can file for an extension."

"If you haven't started yet you need to come see us. Let us get you started. Let's file that extension for you," adds Stevenson.

If you're approved for an extension you'll have until October 15th to file your taxes, but if you owe any money to the IRS you'll still have to pay.

"If you owe taxes you're still liable to pay them by the 15th of April. We can do an estimate to find out if you owe, how much you would owe."

Time is running out as the busy days of tax season come to an end.

"Most of us are exhausted and you know we're kind of sad to see it be over but we're kind of glad that it is, but the last two days you know we're really busy and we work long hours so it's sad but sweet."

Jackson-Hewitt says that it can take anywhere from fifteen or twenty minutes to a couple of hours to get your taxes done. You have until May 15th to file state taxes.
