SLPSO makes positive ID on deceased Story Lane attacker

ST. LANDRY PARISH, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office has made a positive identification on the deceased attacker who was involved in the home invasion on Story Lane, Opelousas on Thursday, April 17, 2014.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff Bobby J. Guidroz said, “On April 18 at approximately 1:38 a.m., deputies responded to a complaint regarding a home invasion on Story Lane. The victim advised detectives that she was awakened by a male subject attacking her with a cane knife. While the victim was trying to escape, the suspect rolled over and became unconscious. At this time, the victim was able to run to her neighbor’s home to call for help.”

Guidroz stated, “When deputies arrived at the scene they located the attacker laying face down on the floor. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.” 

“There were no visible signs of trauma that would have caused his death. An autopsy was done at Lafayette Forensic Center on April 17, 2014. The results of the autopsy are pending at this time,” Guidroz added.

St. Landry Parish Sheriff’s Office Spokesperson Captain Megan Vizena said, “On April 18, 2014, detectives identified the suspect as 52 year old Phillip Manuel of Opelousas. It is unknown at this time to whether the suspect and the victim knew each other.”

“At this time the victim is in stable condition recovering from her wounds. This investigation is still ongoing,” Vizena added.
