Softball: Kincannon leads NSU in win over Louisiana Tech

Posted: Updated:
NATCHITOCHES, La. (KALB News Channel 5) Freshman Kellye Kincannon’s two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh aided the Northwestern State softball team in an 8-7 win over in-state rival Louisiana Tech Wednesday evening at the Lady Demon Diamond.

Kincannon also dished out a season-high seven RBI, a homer, her eighth of the season, and a double for a 3-for-4 performance to lead the Lady Demons (22-19 overall) at the plate. She put NSU on the board in the first when she cranked a three-run homer to center field, and contributed two more runs in the bottom of the fifth off a two-RBI double to the left field fence.

Brittney Jones put the Lady Demons up by four in the second when she led off the inning with a home run to left center.

The Lady Techsters (18-28) used a four-hit splurge and capitalized on a Lady Demon error to tie the game in the top of the fifth, and took a 7-6 lead in the sixth off a three-run homer from Anna Cross.

In the seventh, Cali Burke reached on a walk and was replaced by pinch-runner Tashana Triplett, who advanced to second and later to third as Brittany Virgoe and  Cassandra Barefield were both hit by pitches, and drew up Kincannon. The Clute, Texas, native found the hole between the first and second basemen to give Triplett and Virgoe the chance to scoot home and claim the win.

Burke went 2-for-3 at the plate, followed by Jones at 1-for-3 and one RBI.

Baylee Gray (3-5) earned the win after relieving starter Skylar Cagle in the sixth. Gray allowed three hits and three runs, while Cagle gave up seven hits and four runs, while striking out three.

Northwestern State heads to Nicholls State on Saturday for a three-game Southland Conference series starting at one o’clock, and will conclude the regular season with a series against Southeastern Louisiana on May 3rd and 4th at the Lady Demon Diamond. Sunday’s finale with the Lady Lions will also be senior day.
