Fire damages three Alexandria homes

ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5) - A multiple alarm fire on Myrtle Street set flames to one home and damaged two other buildings.

The Alexandria Fire Department has not confirmed how the fire started, but the owner of the home behind us told us what happened.

It started about 11 on Friday morning.

“All I know is my daughter came and said her cover caught on fire. I thought she was joking, but I went to go look at it we poured water on it and it ignited. I told everybody to run out the house,” said Willie Collins, whose house caught fire.

That’s what happened to start a fire that would spread from his home to a neighboring building, and also damaged a third structure.

“I freaked out, I left work came running. I am still out of breath. The far end of my apartment is fire damaged, the window is melted. The unit that was in there is melted off. There is daylight coming through my kitchen. There is smoke everywhere," Victoria Israel, whose home was damaged.

It took about two hours for fire fighters to extinguish the flames - a fire some in the community described as something they have rarely seen.

“This is one that you will fight about every six months. It's pretty intense, exposure is involved that's really in play, wind against you. Lot of stuff that is going on, it is not an everyday fire," said Gregg Franklin, a retired firefighter.

But for those involved, everyone's safety is what's most important.

“Everybody is okay, everybody is okay. I am just glad everybody from the fire department didn't get hurt. That's what I am glad of. Everything is okay," said Collins.

Collins told us that he and his mother live in the home and his daughter was visiting when the fire started.

Collins also said that they will be staying with family for the time being.
