Coco case remains cold a decade later

Posted: Updated:
ALEXANDRIA, La. (KALB News Channel 5)- It's been nearly ten years since 19 year old Courtney Coco disappeared from Alexandria and was never seen or heard from again. Her body was discovered in East Texas a few days after she was last seen, but her killer was never found. Now the family is offering up a new reward for anyone who can help them catch that killer. News Channel 5's Rachael Penton has an update on the Courtney Coco cold case.

In front of the Belgard home is a barn with a sign. It says Courtney's Candles, but Courtney isn't there.

"She was standing right in my driveway. Three-thirty in the afternoon and that's the last time I saw her," says Courtney's mother, Stephanie Belgard.

Inside the home a candle is burning in memory of Courtney Coco. The ASH graduates body was discovered in an abandoned vehicle in Winnie, Texas on October 4th, 2004.

"There are days when it seems like I haven't seen Courtney in a hundred years and there are days when it seems like yesterday," says Courtney's grandmother, Ina Laborde.

KALB has been following the story all along.

But it's been nearly a decade and Courtney's case is a cold case.

"This investigation has been something absolutely like I have never ever imagined in my life," adds Laborde.

Courtney's mother Stephanie Belgard believes that part of the reason the case hasn't been solved is because of a dispute over exactly whose case it was. It's not known which state the 19 year old was murdered in.

"Louisiana would always say Texas's case and Texas would always say Louisiana's case," says Belgard.

And over the year's it seems that the flame that is Courtney's case has faded away.

"I'm no more closer to knowing what happened to her than on the day that I got that call," says Belgard.

Back in that barn out front Stephanie hand makes candles. It's something she does to cope with the pain.

"I get in there and I kind of lose myself and forget about everything for a little while, but that's my get-away."

But Stephanie started the business for another reason. She has been selling the candles throughout the years to earn enough money to offer as a reward.

"We have a ten-thousand dollar reward for any information that leads to an arrest and conviction in her case," adds Belgard.

Now the family hopes that anyone with information will come forward.

"I know that she's not going to come back, but I want to put it to rest and close that chapter."

So that Courtney's case can finally be solved.

"I'm her voice now. She can't speak so I'm going to speak for her and I'm going to fight for justice for her until the day I die or until her case is solved," says Belgard.

If you have any information about Courtney Coco's murder you are asked to contact the Rapides Parish Sheriff's Office at: 318-473-6727.

The Chambers County, Texas sheriff's department is in charge of the investigation. We reached out to them. They declined to comment on the case but told us via email that several senior investigators are currently reviewing the case file.
